These plays were written and performed decades ago, when I lacked the funds to record the music properly in a studio. The music was recorded live during performances. The music from Splendour Harmonies Returning, Dangerous Gardenias and Shangri-la are a bit rough because of this. However, they do have the verve of live performances before an audience. In the case of Shangri-la, the band consists of Charles Neville, himself, on saxophone, as well as other exceptional New Orleans musicians and singers.
Alvin Batiste’s music for A Bitter Glory, arranged by Bert Cross, was recorded by Bert Cross — in his living room! However, Jody Dickerson’s music for The Laughing Lady was recorded in a studio. I hope you enjoy it all. — Dalt Wonk.
